The Interview

The pre-enrollment interview is crucial for Kumon Instructors, parents and students. Parents are concerned that their children succeed; students are wondering if this will be "fun"; and Instructors know that they must start the student and the parents off just right if the program is to succeed. The pre-enrolment interview provides an initial introduction to the Kumon Method and materials. Parents and students are always encouraged to bring their questions and concerns to the Instructor.

The Placement Test

Placement Tests are important documents in the Kumon program. These tests are designed to pinpoint the level of ability in basic skills regardless of the student's current academic level. On each test, students are timed. Accuracy (the number of correct answers) and time used are then plotted on the Placement Test graph. This indicates the most appropriate starting point in the materials. The results often surprise parents and students because the starting point seems lower than their child's level of ability.

A Comfortable Starting Point

The results of the Placement Test often provoke strong emotions in students. Many parents initially feel that the starting point is too low and that their child's abilities have been underestimated. The starting point is intentionally below students' current conceptual level and there are good reasons for this. The starting point is designed to be comfortable, so that students can achieve 100% in their early work. They will experience success daily, and gain confidence and momentum to work their way through the more challenging concepts.
